Qualification for Board certification requires:A Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology is a periodontist that has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty.
- Dental certification including college education and dental school completion.
- Periodontal certificate follows completion of a three-year program approved by the American Dental Association. These programs concentrate on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease, regeneration of supporting tissues of the teeth and their substitutes, and the maintenance of dental health, function and esthetics.
- Comprehensive oral and written examinations evaluating understanding of all phases of periodontal disease and its treatment, including dental implants.
- Continued competency in periodontics through annual continuing education requirements.
